Gig 75a: Marmite Junction on All FM, Manchester – 9th September 2012

Hey gang! Get ready for another post where I don’t really have that much to say! I also have a strict deadline of 8 minutes to write it, so I can’t go into detail even if I wanted to.  You lucky, lucky people.

So, I was asked by Adam Blaize – who I know through Magical Animals –  if I wanted to make a guest appearance on a show he’d be co-presenting with Sam Smith (another Magical Animals alumni).  As I’m writing this post then I clearly said yes.  I’ve made a few radio appearances in the past (I’ve written about them elsewhere on this blog, but can’t be bothered finding the links. As I say, I’m on a tight deadline.  To be honest, I’m wasting time telling you this. I’d better crack on).  All those other appearances have been with my close friend Vic McGlynn.  These shows have been pretty easy to do because we know each other really well and she’s a consummate radio professional.  It felt like it would be good experience to appear with people I don’t know as well, and to see how I’d cope.

In short (as I only have 2 minutes left), it was a lot of fun. We basically just did a bit of a daft chat in between songs. I think I came up with some funny stuff.  My girlfriend told me that I did, but she’s biased, so I can’t say for sure.

And that is, literally, it.  Don’t worry, one day I will start writing interesting blog posts, but you’ll need to keep reading to find out when that happens.

P.s.

The show was called Marmite Junction. That’s why it says “Marmite Junction” in the title.

Gig 54a: Acting Daft @ Beatwolf Radio – 8th May 2012

As I mentioned in my write up for Gig 55, I made an impromptu appearance on the radio yesterday.  Beatwolf Radio.  This is me telling you about it, now.

Errr, there’s not a lot to tell, to be honest, but I need to write this post for my records.   Beatwolf Radio is a new internet station – it’s excellent, listen here – and my friend Vic is one of the DJs.  So she got me on her show to do another daft quiz.  It was really daft.  The prize was Michael Bolton’s Greatest Hits and Meat Loaf’s new album.  Exciting.  There were two entries and one of them actually got all three “questions” correct. Winner! This qualifies it as my most successful radio quiz ever.

Anyway, that was that.  It was a lot of fun…for me, at least.

TGB 31\Gig 44a: Terry Dowling aka Den Kodd on BBC Radio Leeds – 2nd April 2012

Terry Dowling aka Den Kodd aka One of the North-West’s leading\only Ken Dodd tribute acts makes a guest appearance on BBC Radio Leeds with Vic McGlynn.  He tells us a poem and then quizzes the Yorkshire\North Lincolnshire region with an amazing love songs-based quiz.  Can you get all the answers right?

Yes, probably.

Unless you can’t.

You’ll have to have a listen and find out for yourself.

TGB 30\Gig 24b: Dr Brian Sox on BBC Radio Leeds – 2nd January 2012

What better way to usher in the New Year than another strange quiz on the radio?  Well, I’m sure you could think of a better way, but I can’t.

I didn’t have much notice prior to this radio appearance, and I was back at work the next day, so it took all my might to create “hilarious” comedy character Dr Brian Sox (senior lecturer in quizzes at the prestigious Torben Piechnik Institute).  As always, the show was hosted by the wonderful Vic McGlynn and this time we produced perhaps the oddest segment ever.  So much so, that one listener text in to say how bad it was.  How proud I was.

Anyway, have a listen for yourself and find out just how awful radio quizzes can be.

Woooooooo!  Watch out, there’s a ghost in my house! (not literally)

Gig 18a: Spooky Halloween Quiz on BBC Radio Leeds – 31st October 2011

Last night saw one of my occasional forays into the world of radio as I appeared on BBC Radio Leeds (courtesy, as always, of the inflatious Vic McGlynn).  As it was Halloween, I conducted a spooky, supernatural themed quiz in the guise of Bob Crowling, Britain’s premier paramentalist.

I don’t know if any of the audience liked it, but I had a ball.  You can’t beat mucking about in character, can you? (No, you can’t).

Anyway, you can listen (for the next 7 days) by following the link below:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/p00l2814

The quiz starts at 1:20:25 into the programme and continues directly after the first song played.  The answers are then given from 1:41:30.

I hope to make a podcast of the quiz, if I can work out how to do it.

Woooooooooo!!!!! (That was me pretending to be a ghost.)

Gig 13: The Occasional Cabaret @ The Yard Theatre, Hulme – 1st October 2011

If you were to read through my gig diary posts, you should be able to glean two things about my performances:

1) They don’t always go very well.

2) I have an almost masochistic tendency to try new and different things.

So, it’s with this in mind that I tell you about Saturday night when I appeared in a wrestling double-act (Sheee Beast Vs Masked McGee) at a clowning cabaret.  Oh, yes, you really did read that right.

My friend Vic is well into clowning and has been on several courses run by Clown Lab.  I don’t know what clowning is, to the extent that just thinking about it makes me feel confused and angry.  Vic was working on a wrestling character – Sheee Beast – for Clown Lab’s second anniversary show, The Occasional Cabaret, and following some mucking around (a professional term for workshopping an idea), I ended up joining her as Masked McGee (an idiot in a mask).

This was my first creative collaboration, so whatever the outcome, it was going to be an interesting process.  We came up with the basis of the material by improvising in character and then picking out the bits that seemed to work, before threading it together into a story.  The concept was based on Sheee Beast, a successful female wrestler, performing a promo in which she announces her retirement.  In classic wrestling style, she is interrupted by her nemesis, the buffoon that is Masked McGee.  We then trace their complicated personal relationship before the inevitable physical confrontation.

I didn’t find collaborating particularly easy, basically because I don’t like having to compromise.  There’s something comforting about the idea of succeeding or failing on your own ideas alone.   However, the fact that it wasn’t particularly easy is what makes it something worth pursuing.

So, to the performance.  It was quite a difficult one to judge.  We both noticed quite a few uninterested faces in the audience (which is understandably quite off-putting), but we also got quite a few laughs.   I was a bit baffled by the blank faces especially when I entered, because I thought I’d get more of a reaction just for the weirdness of it.

There were things in my performance that I’d definitely work on.  For example, when I entered the room,I didn’t know what kind of energy to have or quite how to play it.  I thought it would come out naturally as soon as I stepped out, but it was probably a bit confused.  I was also conscious of wondering quite how to perform on stage.  It was the first “acted” piece that I’ve done, but there was also the element of directly addressing the audience- as with stand up – so it was hard to find the balance between the two aspects.
We both have ideas on how to improve and tweak the material and the relationship between the two characters, so I think it’s something that we need to perform again to see how it can develop.  A video of the performance exists but I’ve not had the balls to watch it yet.  I think it might be more than a little disturbing.

The Gravy Boat 27: Gary Barlow Interview

The Gravy Boat is proud to present an exclusive interview with “Gary Barlow” by Vic McGlynn, that originally broadcast on BBC Radio Leeds. Gazza discusses The X Factor, Simon Cowell, the other judges and the future of Take That. It’s a not to be missed chat with one of the true giants of the entertainment industry.  Good old GB.

Vic McGlynn: Twatting On – Stand 14, 08:45 (am)

20110819-165628.jpg
I thought I’d give a full review to one of the shows that I’ve seen while in Edinburgh, just to prove that I’ve still got it, review-wise. Some people have criticised my reviewing ability in the past. “You’re shit at reviews,” screamed the review review. Well, screw you.

Anyway, this isn’t about me. (Have I just proved that I’m not a good reviewer? ZING!)….on with the show.

I arrived at Stand 14 at around 8am to ensure that I had a good seat. Getting a good seat is essential. Well, not essential, but it’s good. The venue is extremely intimate (i.e. small) so there’s often a bun fight for the best chairs. Literally a bun fight. With buns. I often keep a few stale cobs in my manbag because they’re harder than a fresh bap. Anyway, I needn’t have worried as it wasn’t a sell out. Which was a bit confusing in a one-seater venue (it’s a cupboard under some stairs).

The previous show (Uncle Dave Comes Clean – a one star show if I’ve ever seen one) over ran, so I was a bit miffed that I had rushed over so soon. I hadn’t even had any breakfast, for fuck’s sake. Pardon my French. Although “fuck” isn’t French, so I don’t know why people say that. Maybe it is French. I don’t know, I’m not a linguist, for fuck’s sake.

Eventually, the show started. The premise is that every day features an improvised 60-minute monologue, in which McGlynn, quite literally, twats on. It’s a bold move which neither works nor not works. Some people might say: “it exists” and I think that this is as compelling a description as any.

The seat was comfy and the lighting adequate. All in all, it was a show.
