Gig 10: SAS Comedy, Lass O’ Gowrie, Manchester – 13th August 2011
August 14, 2011 5 Comments
Last night I performed stand up comedy in the guise of Gary Barlow. Yes, Gary Barlow from Take That. That’s the sort of crazy guy I am.
The Gazza Barlow character was partially inspired by this video I made:
I also road-tested the basic premise of the character in Gig 5b, when I asked Take That related questions at Quizzilingus – Chorlton’s best pub quiz. At the quiz, I performed as Barry Garlow – a Gary Barlow impersonator. Last night I made the transformation into GB himself. The chameleon-like process essentially consisted of me gelling my hair back and putting on a waistcoat. It was quite remarkable.
Apart from re-using a few of the questions from the quiz, this was essentially a new 10-minute set, so it’s a good job I had 2 weeks between gigs in which to learn it. It’s remarkable how much changes by constant repetition, and even on the day of the gig I was making significant changes.
I suffered the usual symptoms of nervousness that I always do: asking myself why I’m doing it and not being able to remember any of the material. But I did remember it, despite drying up momentarily in a few moments. I enjoyed the performance, it got quite a few laughs and I got some positive feedback. All in all it was a pretty successful gig. Good old, GB.

Hi Guys!
It’s only me. Yes, me. Ste. That rhymes doesn’t it? Yes, yes it does. But that’s not really why I’m here.
The point is this: I just re-read through this post and it’s a bit half-hearted. Sorry. I’m just a bit tired. This doesn’t bode well because I’m going to Edinburgh tomorrow and it’s not exactly going to be restful. Not that I’m complaining. I’m excited to go, really.
Anyway, I’m waffling now, so I’m off.
Night

Hi Ste,
I’m sick I missed this – I like the sound of Barry Garlow!
Wanted to tell you about my Edinburgh experiences before you go but it’s been pretty busy since, with a friend staying over etc.
Henning was a lot better live that I even imagined, very confident, likeable (shook everyone’s hand as they left and stuff), and, indeed, funny! Also check out Paco Erhard, his gig (at Three Sisters) is free and really worth seeing. (Not wishing to give the impression I only went to see German comedians, far from it.) I got to take in seven shows in all, five of which were free… quality incredibly mixed. Overall I had a great time, sure you will too!

Hi Dannie,
Apologies for the delay in replying to your comment! It’s a pity you weren’t there, it was an interesting night! Hopefully I’ll be performing as Gary again soon!
Sadly, I didn’t get chance to see Henning in Edinburgh as the times clashed with other shows that I was going to see. I got to see 15 shows over 3 days so it was a very busy schedule!
