Bears, Romcoms and Cats

The beauty of my ‘waffle’ posts is that I can just start typing and see what happens. This comes in particularly handy when you don’t really have anything to say. Like today.
Perhaps I don’t have a lot to say because I’ve been skulking around the office like a bear with a sore head. Almost literally like a bear with a sore head. Except that I’m human and that the soreness of my noggin is entirely metaphorical. Yesterday I exclaimed that I didn’t like films (yes, the whole concept of them), because ‘who’s got two hours to waste on a shit story’. Yes, I really did say that. Fortunately, I was being at least semi-tongue-in-cheek. You should all rest assured that I do like some films.
Incidentally, my favourite film is probably Amelie, and, by default, this makes it my favourite romcom. There have been various rumours flying around about which is my favourite romcom – it’s the talk of the town – and I think it’s only right and proper that I finally clear things up. Sometimes I like to play the Amelie soundtrack while I’m driving home from work so I can imagine that I’m in a magical French fantasy rather than in the depressing Warringtonian rush-hour traffic. It’s a surprisingly effective technique.
In an effort to stop being grumpy, I’ve been almost constantly listening to “Miaow Episode 1” by Chris Lilley. It’s taken from the soundtrack of Summer Heights High and it makes me wee with laughter every time I hear it. To be fair, if you’ve never watched the programme, then it will probably be meaningless to you, but it might be worth a listen on Spotify anyway. Especially if you like listening to people do impressions of cats.
P.s.
If you’ve never watched Summer Heights High then it is well worth a look. It’s currently being repeated on BBC3 at some ungodly hour, but I’m sure that you can find it on iPlayer. Mr G is a classic comedy character. I won’t explain why, just go and watch it.

Does Warrington take on a magical quality, then, when you play the Amelie soundtrack?
I think it’s a good idea that airports play music that best represents them: Heathrow could play a Chas ‘n’ Dave medley…Edinburgh a continual drone of bagpipes (they do that already, to be fair…) and John Lennon Airport could play a host of Beatles tracks. Get you in the mood, innit?
It doesn’t quite reach magical status, but I do get to imagine that I’m in a French film for a few minutes, which is quite an achievement. The confluence of several motorways around Warrington make it a particular hot bed of the ‘traffic jam’ (as all the kids are calling them) and so any relief from the tedium is most welcome. I find that you get a similar effect by listening to any French music.
Perhaps airports should supply all passengers with individualised headphones that play a song that is relevant to their destination – Y Viva Espana pour example – and so holidaymakers would acclimatised sooner once they reach their resorts.
Or they could all just play ‘Leaving on a Jet Plane’ as a catch all.
