Fiorentina 2 Liverpool 0

So, last night wasn’t exactly a great night for the Reds.  As I watched the match from the exotic location of Chicago Rock Cafe, Warrington, I’m going to have to write this post from memory.

The first half was absolutely dire from Liverpool; they couldn’t get a kick.  To be fair to Fiorentina, they were as excellent as Liverpool were poor.  They pressed us hard all over the pitch and their speed of passing and willingness to spring in to attack were all first class.  They were fully deserving of their two goal lead, both strikes provided by teenage striker Stevan Jovetic .

A seemingly different Liverpool team came on to the pitch in the second half, and, although they didn’t score, they at least made a fist of it.  Had we had a little more luck then we might have nicked a goal and really made a go of it in the last 15 minutes, but it wasn’t to be.  I still felt we had a chance of getting back in to the game with as little to go as ten minutes, so the performance couldn’t have been that bad.  In a reversal of many of Liverpool’s European performances, Fiorentina did enough to contain us.

There’s still a long way to go in the group, but this really piles on the pressure to get results against current group leaders, Lyon.  Let’s also hope that Rafa can get the players head’s right for the weekend’s game against Chelsea.

Your last point in the best one. Lyon have been given a huge gift with Fiorentina beating Liverpool. I think Lyon are an amazing side and could easily win the group. Liverpool almost has to earn a win in at least one of their matches with Lyon coming up to have any chance of winning the group.

I think you probably need a minimum of 10 points to go through to the next round so Liverpool will almost certainly need to beat Lyon at least once. I have to admit that I know very little about Lyon, but they’ve had such a good start to the CL campaign that they’re clearly a good side. This looks to be a very tough group.

  4. The fact that Mascherano and Aquilani should be coming back to fitness around that time is helpful, though.

Absolutely! Mascherano’s season doesn’t feel like it got going and Aquilani’s definitely hasn’t started. Getting them both fit should be a massive boost. I’m really intrigued to see what Aquilani is actually like as a player!

We collectively lost as a team, be it the tactic or the player themselves. What’s done is done .. I look forward to the Chelsea game .. a game that will paint a clearer picture where our season is heading.

The Chelsea match will certainly be a good barometer for the season ahead. We’ve not done great against anyone half decent so far, so they really need to put in a performance on Sunday.
