Comedy Overload
September 24, 2009 7 Comments
On Sunday, I was reading an interview with Josie Long on comedy web-site, Chortle, and I was inspired to see if she had any live dates coming up in the North West. I got rather giddy and excited when I saw that she was performing at the Darwin Birthday Spectacular at The Lowry on 9th December; stand-up comedy meets evolution, it sounds like my perfect night’s entertainment. I obviously wanted to book tickets immediately but had a nagging feeling that I had something else on that week, so I checked. While I didn’t have anything booked on the 9th (hooray!), for the rest of the week I had tickets for:
John Bishop – Tuesday 8th
Ricky Gervais – Thursday 10th
Jason Cook – Friday 11th
Of course, I booked tickets anyway. The title of this post is slightly misleading because ‘overload’ suggests a bad thing whereas in reality that week is going to be great! Live comedy four nights in a row sounds like the best week ever. The only downsides I can see are as follows:
1) Where I will find time to blog about each gig.
2) Where I will find four separate people to go to the gigs with me.
The blogging part is easily fixed as I can just delay publication until I’ve had chance to write the posts (obviously). As for the other problem I’m afraid I’m going to have to beg. If you know me, and you’re free, do you want to go to any of them?

Surely your real life pals would bite your hand off?
There was a hand biting off incident last year, the surgery was horrific.
Unfortunately, I’m much less popular in the real world than my erudite electronic banter would suggest.
If you invite Hans, i may be persuaded.
Hmmm, I’m not sure. The last time I went to a comedy gig with Hans he insisted on getting up on stage and doing a ‘set’. Let’s just say that it didn’t go well. But he’s dying to meet you so I might risk it if he promises to be on his best behaviour.
BIG Ricky Gervais fans in our house too–and we’re hoping his new movie “Invention of Lying” (?) will be a return to form. His collaborations with Steve Merchant are peerless. Dylan Moran’s “Black Books” series is another fave, comedy for which we have no equivalent here in Canada, sad to say.
Envy your chance to see terrific shows. Lucky bastid…
Yeah, I’m interested to see Ricky’s new film, it seems like an interesting idea. I can’t help think though that he should get back to making TV shows. It’s a shame when people get success and so don’t end up doing the thing that they’re actually good at!
We do seem to be spoilt by the quantity and quality of live stand up that we get in the UK, that’s why I try to go and see as much as I can, it’s a great night out.
